Component Pricing

Displaying the price of your product or service is a popular advertising technique, especially leading up to Christmas and during various sale times throughout the year. If you do include prices in your ad, they are required under the law to be clear, accurate and not misleading to consumers.

Travel offers at this time of year are particularly popular as we all start planning our dream end of year getaway. Offers represented in an ad that includes the price of a flight, cruise, tour or accommodation must include any terms and conditions that apply to the offer. Especially if the offer is reliant on the purchase of another component of the travel deal.

For example a travel company offering cheap flights to the Bahamas on the condition that you also book 10 nights at the private island, CocoCay, must disclose this condition in their ad and the total cost of the flight and accommodation.

For further guidance on how you can display prices in your ads, check out our ClearAds Information Sheet on Producing TVCs which include Component Pricing in our Handbook.

Hot Tips on Component Pricing

A ‘single price’ is the minimum total cost that is quantifiable at the time the commercial is produced.

This ‘single price’ must include all of the following:

1. Any charges payable by a consumer to purchase the good or service (for example, administration fees, compulsory service charges, booking fees); and

2. Any taxes, duties, fees, levies or charges payable by the consumer for the supply of the good or service (for example, GST or sales tax).

The Single Price Does Not Need to Include:

Optional Extras

These are additional charges the consumer may choose to pay. An optional extra does not include a price of a good or service which is discounted but such discount is dependent on the purchase of another product or service (in this instance, compliance with component pricing requirements is required);

Delivery Charges
Unless, at the time of the commercial, you are aware of a minimum charge that must be paid to receive the good or service.
